An aspiring painter, trapped in an abusive marriage, falls in love with a prostitute, who scams him out of the money for his paintings with the help of her pimp. The second sound film by Jean Renoir. Remade in 1945 as Scarlet Street, directed by Fritz Lang and starring Edward G. Robinson and Joan Bennett.
