Sokoloff was born in Moscow and trained at the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts and the Moscow Art Theatre. He emigrated to the US in the 1930s, where he found a vibrant career as a theatre and film actor in roles ranging in nationality, including Chinese, Mexican, Italian, and his own native Russian. He was best known for "Mission to Moscow" (1943), "For Whom the Bell Tolls" (1943), "The Magnificent Seven" (1960).
