Based on the 1913 novel by D.H. Lawrence, about a young man caught between his domineering, manipulative mother, his repressed former girlfriend, and an independent but married co-worker. Winner of an Academy Award, nominated for six others including, Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Trevor Howard, and Best Screenplay. Nominated for the Palme d’Or.

Set in an English coal-mining town in the early twentieth century. Shot on location in English coal-mining county of Nottinghamshire.
