The musical opened at the Winter Garden Theatre on September 26, 1957 for an enormously successful run of 732 performances, closing on June 27, 1959.

"West Side Story" would see four Broadway revivals, as recently as 2020, as well as three UK productions. It was Stephen Sondheim's Broadway debut.
Director and choreographer Jerome Robbins, who conceived the musical, would go on to co-direct (with Robert Wise) the 1961 Academy Award winning musical film, starring Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer.
Nominated for six Tony Awards, winner of two, including Best Choreographer for Robbins.
