Based on the 1923 novel by Sir Walter Scott. The third film in an unofficial trilogy made by director Richard Thorpe and producer Pandro S. Berman, and starring Robert Taylor, the two preceding films being "Ivanhoe" (1952) and "Knights of the Round Table" (1953).

Taylor plays the titular character, the penniless son of an aging Scottish nobleman dispatched to propose to the French Countess of Marcroy, played by Kendall, on behalf of his aging uncle, as arranged by the Duke of Burgundy, but falls madly in love with her.

Set in 15th century France, shot on location in France and England.
