A struggling artist (Alan Ladd) is accused of murdering his unstable, alcoholic wife (Carolyn Jones) when she goes missing, and must flee from the lynch mob forming amongst the townsfolk.

Set in fictional Stoneville, Connecticut, shot on location in Woodstock and Thompson, Connecticut and Framingham, Massachusetts.
