Joan Fontaine, hell-bent on seducing her way into money, tries to break off her extramarital affair in order to woo a wealthier man. When her new target refuses her affection because of her current marriage, she poisons her husband and frames her lover for the crime. A classic, visually striking period noir, with a ruthless woman, dogged police, and karmic fate. One of a litany of films released in 1947 that make it the most significant year for the femme fatale, joined by "The Paradine Case" and "Out of the Past."
