New York: United Press International, 1976. Under the control of flamboyant ambassador Ardeshir Zahedi, the Iranian embassy proved to be one of the more popular and extravagant nightlife locations throughout the 1970s, a place where DC's political elite mingled with celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor and Barbra Streisand. However, the Iranian Revolution of 1979 led to the rise of anti-Iran sentiment in the US, and by 1980 the Iranian embassy had been shut down for good.
