British cabinet minister, Dr. Stephen Fleming (Jeremy Irons), falls desperately and obsessively in love with his son's fiancee, Anna (Juliette Binoche). After beginning a tempestuous affair, Stephen tells Anna that he is willing to sacrifice his family and his cabinet position to be with her, something which Anna has no intention of allowing.

Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Miranda Richardson.
