The Boy Friend

Ken Russell (director, screenwriter)
Sandy Wilson (musical)
Twiggy, Christopher Gable, Max Adrian (starring)

Beverly Hills, CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM] / EMI, 1971. Two vintage studio issued color still photographs from the 1971 musical film, one showing actors Twiggy and Christopher Gable dancing on a giant record player, the other showing cast members whimsically attired for the elf sequence, sitting on large mushrooms.

Based on the 1953 West End musical by Sandy Wilson, about a mousy stage manager forced to take the lead in a low-budget musical revue after the lead actress breaks her leg. While Wilson's original is a straightforward pastiche of 1920s musicals, director Ken Russell's adaptation is a full-blown parody of 1930s musical films, particularly Busby Berkeley, with heavy metatextual elements, as the more lavish numbers take place in the imagination of a Hollywood producer watching the show.

10 x 8 inches. Very Good plus overall.
