Based on the 1947 play by screenwriters Ruth and Augustus Goetz, which itself was based on the 1880 novel "Washington Square" by Henry James. A shy young woman from a wealthy family falls in love with a handsome but poor young man, who her father suspects is only interested in her money and threatens to disinherit her should they marry. Winner of four Academy Awards including Best Actress for de Havilland, nominated for four more, Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Supporting Actor.
Set in 1850s New York City.
