Two disparate souls, a US marine and a Catholic nun, are stranded on a deserted island together in the South Pacific during World War II.

Nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Actress for Kerr and Best Screenplay.

Set on Tuasiva Island, shot on location in Trinidad and Tobago.

Mitchum shot two films in Trinidad/Tobago in 1956/1957, the other being Robert Parrish's "Fire Down Below" with Jack Lemmon and Rita Hayworth, and met Calypso musicians Mighty Sparrow and Lord Invador, inspiring him to release his own Calypso album "Calypso - Is Like So" in March 1957.
