Based on the 1932 novel by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall. Previously filmed in 1935, directed by Frank Lloyd, and starring Charles Laughton and Clark Gable.

Reed served as the film's original director, leaving the production after three months of filming, to be replaced by Lewis Milestone.

A dramatization of the real-life mutiny which occurred on the HMAV Bounty off the coast of Tahiti in 1789.

Set and shot on location in Tahiti.
