Based on the 1900 novel by Octave Mirbeau, a political and class satire about a chambermaid to a family of eccentrics who stays on the unsuccessfully seek vengeance for the murder of a young girl. The first collaboration between Buñuel and screenwriter Jean-Claude Carriere.
Set in and shot on location in Essonne, Seine-Maritime, and Val-de-Marne, France.
