One of Hollywood's premiere directors during the 1920s and 1930s, whose career spanned both the silent and the sound era. Sternberg was a master cinematographer with an unmistakable use of chiaroscuro, but is perhaps best known for his seven films with the actress Marlene Dietrich, including the 1930 masterpiece "The Blue Angel."
