Bret Harte [Francis Brett Harte]

N.p. Vanguard Films, 1944. Original story script for an unproduced film, Bret Hart's unedited 1869 short story, here reproduced by Vanguard Films, dated August 9, 1944.

Harte's short story was originally published in the January 1869 edition of Overland Monthly magazine. There have been several film and television adaptations made of the popular story, the earliest being John Ford's 1919 silent film, now considered lost. In 1937 Christy Cabanne directed a version starring Preston Foster and Jean Muir, and in 1952 Joseph Newman directed Anne Baxter and Dale Robertson in the story. The most recent was the 1975 Spaghetti Western "The Four of the Apocalypse...," directed by Lucio Fulci and starring Fabio Testi and Lynne Frederick.

Set in Poker Flat, outside the town of La Porte, California.
