A gleeful, relentless gangster befriends a lawyer, but their relationship is complicated by the lawyer's alcoholism and secret love for the gangster's girlfriend. Despite studio executives' dismal predictions, the film was a breakout hit, one which would establish Sternberg's formidable presence in Hollywood and kick off his eight-year collaboration with Paramount Pictures.
