Based on 1952 novel "The Key to Nicholas Street" by Stanley Ellin about a wealthy vintner finds it difficult to balance the demands of his wife, his children, his best friend, and his recently murdered mistress. Director Claude Chabrol's first color film and his first psychological thriller, a genre which would largely define Chabrol's long and prolific career.
