The acclaimed Italian actress is perhaps best known for her starring roles in the films of Michelangelo Antonioni, particularly his classic trilogy on "modernity and its discontents," "L'Avventura" (1960), "La Notte" (1961), and "L'Eclisse" (1962). In the mid 1960s Vitti would make a fourth film with Antonioni, the bleak, beautiful, industrial "Red Desert" (1964). Vitti and Antonioni worked together once more, late in their careers, on the experimental "The Myster of Oberwald" (1980).
After working with Antonioni, Viti frequently appearred in comedies in the 1960s and 1970s, often with director Mario Monicelli. In 1989 Vitti made her directorial debut with "Secret Scandal," which she also starred in along side Elliott Gould.
