Based on the 1957 play "Orpheus Descending," which itself was a revision of the 1940 play "Battle of Angels" by Tennessee Williams, who co-wrote the screenplay.

Valentine "Snakeskin" Xavier (Brando) flees the law in New Orleans and finds work at a small-town store run by the resentful and frustrated Lady Torrance (Magnani), whose husband (Victor Jory) lies ill in the apartment above the store.

Set in an unnamed small Southern town.
