INSCRIBED by screenwriter John Wilder to actor Johnny Crawford, who played Mark McCain in the original television series, on the title page: "For the only Rifleman. / The original. The authentic. / If it feels all right to you, then I've done the best I could do. / As always, / John / 3/12/90."

Based on the classic Western television series starring Chuck Connors and Johnny Crawford, about a widowed father and Union Civil War veteran raising his young son in the fictitious town of North Fork, New Mexico Territory.
