The first fictional work to introduce the word “robot” and expand on the concept, originally performed in Czech at the Prague National Theatre in 1921. The play made its US debut in 1922 at the Garrick Theatre, where it ran for 184 performances. The 1942 revival, directed by Lee Strasberg, ran for a brief four performances at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre.
