Paris: Interpress, Circa 1980s. Vintage borderless portrait photograph of gospel singer Marion Williams, circa 1980s.
Williams was born in Miami, Florida, and began singing in her mother's Pentecostal church and on street corners at a young age. She was discovered by Clara Ward of the Famous Ward Singers in 1946, and remained with the group for the next eleven years. Her distinctive soprano register paired with an unusually broad range made her one of the more skilled and versatile gospel singers of her time, and she was accordingly honored by the MacArthur Foundation in 1993, who stated that she was among "the last surviving links to gospel's golden age."
5 x 7 inches. Very Good, with moderate wear to the finish.
