Vintage borderless portrait photograph of actress Maxine Elliott in costume as Violet Woodmere for "The Prodigal Daughter," a play which premiered at the American Theatre in New York in 1897. Re-struck from original negative in 1940. With a printed mimeo snipe noting Elliott's passing on March 5, 1940, in Juan-les-Pins, France affixed to the verso, along with the stamp of International News Photos and a date stamp reading March 11, 1940.

A wildly successful stage actress and businesswoman, Elliott was the first woman to run her own theatre in the United States—the Maxine Elliott Theatre, at 39th Street near Broadway.
