Hollywood: Paramount Pictures, 1979. Vintage pressbook for the 1979 film.
Based on the 1965 novel by Sol Yurick, about a fictitious New York street gang who must travel through the city, from the north end of the Bronx to their home turf in Coney Island, after having been framed for the murder of a well-known gang leader. Upon release the film's pulpy, violent content was linked to crime and vandalism, and even three killings in southern California and Boston, leading Paramount to halt their advertising campaign. Nevertheless, the film proved a significant box office success, particularly among teenage moviegoers, and stands today as one of the first films to present street gang life outside of the moralizing, "juvenile delinquency" framework which characterized previous films about gang violence.
