The poem was first published by the American Poetry Review in 1974.

Renowned for his precise, eloquent language, James Wright published nine volumes of poetry, including his 1972 Pulitzer Prize-winning "Collected Poems," before his death from cancer at the age of 52, in late 1979. Wright's lifelong determination to advocate for the disenfranchised and willingness to experiment with his style, even in the final years of his career, made him one of the most influential and seminal writers in the American poetic canon of the twentieth century.
