Darnell appeared in her first film, "Hotel for Women," in 1939. She was cast in her first starring role quickly thereafter, opposite Tyrone Power in "Brigham Young" in 1940, subsequently gaining leading parts in a number of Twentieth Century-Fox films, most notably "Forever Amber" (1947), "Unfaithfully Yours" (1948), and "A Letter to Three Wives" (1949).
