In 1943 Eleanor Roosevelt planted a victory garden on the White House lawn, after which public service booklets began being distributed by the Department of Agriculture as well as some agribusiness corporations to assist in the war effort. During World War II victory gardens accounted for about one third of all produce produced in the US.
