Based on the adventures of fictional, immortal German nobleman Baron von Münchhausen, created by Rudolf Erich Raspe in his 1785 novel "Baron Münchausen's Narrative of his Marvellous Travels and Campaigns in Russia." The film was commissioned by Nazi Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels during World War II, nominally to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the UFA film studio, released after the German loss at the Battle of Stalingrad in an attempt to reinvigorate German morale.
