Loosely based on "The Tiszaeszlár Affair," an historical event wherein a young Christian girl disappeared, arousing local suspicions that she had been a victim of anti-Christian religious persecution by the Jewish community. The case led to lengthy trial, and is considered to have been a significant motivator of antisemitic agitation in Austria-Hungary in 1882 and 1883.
