The play premiered on March 2, 1955 at the Music Box Theatre, where it ran until February 13, 1956, before moving to the Winter Garden Theatre on February 13, 1956, where it ran from April 21, 1956. Basis for the 1956 film directed by Joshua Logan, starring Marilyn Monroe and Don Murray.

Set in rural Kansas, about 25 miles west of Kansas City, Missouri.
