New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1943. First Edition. Second issue with a price clip on the front flap, publisher's stamped price of "$2.50" at the bottom of the front flap, and a two-paragraph admonition from James Cain (with a photo of the author) about war bonds on the rear panel.

The first appearance in hardcover of three Cain short novels: "Double Indemnity," "Career in C Major," and "The Embezzler." The first two were made into films, the most famous being Billy Wilder's 1944 classic, "Double Indemnity," a cornerstone of the film noir genre scripted by Wilder and Raymond Chandler, and starring Fred Macmurray and Barbara Stanwyck.
