Visconti's classic, spacious homage to the quiet death of the Sicilian aristocracy of the mid-nineteenth century, one of the great films of Italian midcentury cinema. Arguably the apex of Claudia Cardinale's career, and one of a handful of examples of Burt Lancaster's willingness to take on literate, complex roles. Winner of the Palme d'Or.
