Based on the 1945 novel by Jessamyn West. In spite of his family's pacifist wishes, a Quaker decides to join the Home Guard during the early days of the Civil War. When confronted with violence he faces not only his own passion for being a soldier, but the dictates of his faith. Nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Screenplay, and Best Director.

Set in Jennings County, Indiana, and shot on location in California.
