Portrait of Jennie

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1940. First Edition. Warmly INSCRIBED by the author on the first blank: "For Arthur and Rita Kleeman / From their friend Robert Nathan / Now who will stand / At my right hand / And hold the P.E.N. with me?"

Nathan was president of the international writers' organization PEN at the time. Rita Kleeman was a writer who also served on PEN's executive board. Kleeman's 1947-1957 correspondence relating to her membership in the organization is now held by Princeton.

Basis for the unforgettable 1948 William Dieterle film starring Joseph Cotten and Jennifer Jones.

Very Good plus in a Very Good plus dust jacket. Spine lightly toned. Jacket is lightly rubbed, with a small chip at the crown, affecting the last part of "Portrait", and a short closed tear on the bottom edge of the front panel.
