Based on the 1937 novel by Roy Vickers, about a young nurse struggling to find work after she is wrongly accused of murder and subjected to a high-profile court case. The first of several collaborations between director Carol Reed and screenwriter Sidney Gilliat, followed by "The Night Train to Munich" (1940), "The Remarkable Mr. Kipps" (1941), and "The Young Mr. Pitt" (1942).
