Original ribbon copy typescript letter, signed by Erle Stanley Gardner, on onionskin with Gardner's letterhead, dated May 12th, 1953, to the Mystery Writers of America, Inc., expressing appreciation for the 1953 Best Fact Crime, Edgar Award, for Gardner's 1952 true crime book "The Court of Last Resort."
Gardner's first foray into true crime, originally begun as a popular true crime column which appeared in Argosy magazine for ten years beginning in September 1948. Enlisting the assistance of police, private detectives, and other experts, Gardner re-examined dozens of cases of convicts who maintained their innocence long after their appeals were exhausted. Gardner's 1952 book featured the most damning cases of injustice Gardner encountered from across the country. Basis for the NBC television court drama of the same name, which aired October 4, 1957 through April 11, 1958.
