Born Gerda Olga Justine Kornstädt in Pomerania in 1908, Parlo made her first film appearance in "Homecoming" in 1928, quickly becoming a successful actress in her homeland. She appeared in several significant French and German films throughout the 1930s, including "L'Atalante" (1934) and "La Grande Illusion" (1937).
