Based on Eiji Yoshikawa's 1935 novel "Musashi," which is in turn loosely based on the life of the famous Japanese swordsman Musashi Miyamoto. The first film of director Hiroshi Inagaki's Samurai Trilogy, followed by the 1955 film "Samuri II: Duel at Ichijoji Temple" and the 1956 film "Samurai III: Duel at Duel at Ganryu," all three starring Toshiro Mifune as Musashi Miyamoto.

The early years of the legendary warrior Musashi Miyamoto as an aspiring warrior, outlaw, and finally a true samurai. Winner of an Honorary Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
