Based on Chabon's 1995 novel. Professor Grady Tripp (Douglas) teaches creative writing in Pittsburgh, struggles writing his second novel, and smokes marijuana in his free time. His wife has left him, and he is having an affair with the Chancellor of the university (McDormand). Grady's editor (Downey, Jr.) inquires about the novel, but becomes interested in a book by one of Grady's students (Maguire), as well as having other, more intimate intentions.

Shot on location throughout Pennsylvania. Bob Dylan won an Academy Award for his original song, "Things Have Changed," and the film was nominated for two more.
