A young orphan, raised by his dysfunctional hillbilly family, befriends a goofy dragon in this live-action animated musical. It was the first animated Disney film in which none of the legendary "nine old men" were involved in the animation process. Ken Anderson created the beloved dragon, loosely modeling him after historical Asian imagery. Upon release, the film was criticized for its composite animation and underdeveloped plot. However, it was nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Original Song and Original song score.
Shot on location in California.
