Cinedis film agency Christmas parties, 1957-1959

[Maryse Martres]

France: Various Publishers, 1957-1959. Collection of thirteen French publisher and distributor catalogs, including a small book-shaped calendar, advertising toys, novelties, and home goods. Most are full-color folding brochures. From the archives of Maryse Martres, in original manila envelope with her name on the front in manuscript ink.

Martres (Martin) was a prolific French actress who was later involved in press relations in France, worked for Cinedis, the notable film agency, and managed much of the company's press and advertising responsibilities. Present in the collection are several checklists on Cinedis parchment, noting members of the agency and their children, and ideas for toy gifts for each child. Martres was in charge, no doubt, of the Christmas gift giving at Cinedis as well. Several negative film strips from a holiday party are also included.

The collection offers a glimpse inside France's mid-century publishing, distributing, and advertising scheme, not unlike the lavish color catalogues from contemporary book dealers, as well as an inside look at the personnel at Cinedis in the late 1950s. Most offer title lists, color illustrations, and prices for prospective clients. Companies and imprints represented include Larousse Illustre, Tout Par l'Image Hachette, Ideal Bibliotheque, Bibliotheque Rouge et Or, Bibliotheque Rose, Gautier-Languereau, Garnier, Collection Super, Groupement D'Exportateurs Fabricants et Artisans Reunis (GEFAR), Au Bon Marche, and Comptoir General de la Bimbeloterie (a novelty, fashion, and house wares catalogue). Great reference for the French library completist.

Catalogs range in size, the largest being 8.25 x 10.5 inches, the smallest being a 2.5 x 3.5 pocket calendar. Name and gift lists on Cinedis parchment, ranging in sizes similar to the catalogues, most with annotations in manuscript ink. Near Fine overall.
