Based on the real life story of Manny Balestrero, accused of a series of robberies he didn't commit, as detailed in the nonfiction book "The True Story of Christopher Emmanuel Balestrero" by Maxwell Anderson, who co-wrote the screenplay, and the "Life" magazine article "A Case of Identity" by Herbert Brean. Hitchcock's final film for Warner Brothers, and an influence on both Jean-Luc Godard and Martin Scorsese.
