Be Your Own Illustrated Man

Ray Bradbury (short stories)
Jack Smight (director)
Howard B. Kreitsek (screenwriter)
Rod Steiger (starring)

Burbank, CA: Warner Brothers / Seven Arts, 1969. Six vintage temporary tattoos, issued as a promotional item for the 1969 film by the beloved but short-lived film studio Warner Brothers-Seven Arts. With both the original envelope housing the tattoos and a Warner Brothers-Seven Arts mailing envelope addressed to film critic, photographer, and poet Michael S. Dworkin.

The decals (shown in reverse here for the sake of readability) are inspired by the designs for the tattoos sported by actor Rod Steiger in the film, with the promotional copy inviting the recipient to “be your own illustrated man.” The only example we have encountered, unsurprising given the temporary nature of the item.

Based on three short stories from Bradbury’s acclaimed collection, “The Veldt,” “The Long Rain,” and “The Last Night of the World.”

Tattoos variously sized between 4.25 x 5.75 and 8.75 x 4 inches. All but one of the tissue guards are still fully attached. Bright and Near Fine.

Promotional envelope 5.25 x 10 inches. Chip to the envelope flap and some bruising from having been opened, else Near Fine.
