Nikolai 'Kolya' Rodchenko (Mikhail Baryshnikov) is an expatriate Soviet dancer whose plane is forced to land on Soviet territory, and prohibited from leaving. Forced to live with the American defector, tap dancer Raymond Greenwood (Hines) and his wife (Rossellini), he must plan an escape, but doesn't know who to trust.

Rossellini's screen debut.

Winner of the Academy Award for Best Song, and nominated for one other.

Shot on location in Russia, England, Finland, Scotland, and Portugal.
