A dramatization of the troubled early life of African American folk singer Huddie Ledbetter, better known as Lead Belly, chronicling the musician's youth in the segregated south and his time in prison, while focusing on Ledbetter's efforts to be a free man through the music he created.

Set in Louisiana and Texas, shot on location in various locations throughout Texas.
