Originally planned for production in 1930, with the aim of creating an authentic, non-stereotypical comedy about African American life in the south, but left unfinished due to a dispute between playwrights Zora Neale Hurston and Langston Hughes. The play finally premiered over six decades later at the Lincoln Center Theatre on February 14, 1991, where it ran for 68 performances.
Set in Eatonville, Florida.
