Draft script for the 1931 pre-Code film by uncredited screenwriter Bayard Veiller, here under the working title "Sinner's Love," with characters names different from that in the final film and source novel, as well as changes to the story's timeline, and a dramatic tragic ending. Script, dated March 11, 1931, was just over two months prior to the beginning of the production in late May, according to AFI Catalog. Annotations in manuscript ink and pencil on front wrapper including "Susan Lenox" on MGM label and an underlined "Do not give out." "File Copy," struck with manuscript pencil, "Temporary," "Complete," and two "Vault Copy" stamps on front wrapper.

Bayard Veiller was a prolific playwright, screenwriter, producer and director, with screenwriting credits for 32 films from 1915 to 1941.

Based on the notorious 1917 novel "Susan Lenox: Her Fall and Rise" by David Graham Phillips.

Greta Garbo is Helga Ohlin, a woman of illegitimate birth attempting to overcome her cruel and abusive life, forced into the life of a kept woman under the name Susan Lenox, all while trying to find happiness with architect Rodney Spencer, played by Clark Gable, who once offered her kindness and shelter.
