Patrick Michael Quilligan (William Bendix), captain of a barge named Mary (named after his mother), meets and falls for two women (Joan Blondell and Mary Treen) who remind him of his beloved deceased mother, inadvertently marrying both.

Set in Brooklyn and Utica, New York.
