Ellen Gordon (Jane Fonda) is New York executive John Cleves' (Jason Robards) mistress, who falls for Cleves' young, out-of-town associate Cass Henderson (Dean Jones), when Cleves' secretary unknowingly sends him to the apartment where they have their trysts. The secretary then compounds the error by telling Cleves' wife Dorothy (Rosemary Murphy) about the apartment.
